Shade and Woodland Gardens

Many of the homeowner landscapes in Massachusetts have been created in sites where trees are prevalent or where trees have been planted and encouraged to create a leafy canopy. This requires a specific type of design plan in order to provide color or plant texture that works well in shady conditions. Below are some examples of our work creating shade and woodland gardens.

A Backyard Oasis

The original landscape in Lexington was a brush and bramble mess which needed to be replaced by a usable family activity center. We transformed the previously overgrown terrain into casual seating, activity areas, and planned views from the house, all while installing a natural drainage system and stabilizing the slopes with erosion control plants.

A Terraced Backyard

In this slope garden, the structural elements of the stone walls, patios and the wooden structure are strongly evident. An overlay by soft, gentle masses of plant materials creates the magical sense of place and discovery. The combination of shapes, textures and colors with hard materials builds the distinct and artful character of this garden.
