Arbors, Treillage & Gates
Entrances are important as first impressions and are usually designed with a style in mind. Arbors, treillage (latticework, especially a trellis for a vine) and gates are all structural elements to be used in those design plans. They can complete the transition spaces between home and garden. Many different styles are available and can even be purchased online.

- Arched Arbor EntrywayAn arbor enhances the first impression of any garden. Walking through lattice walls planted with fragrant autumn clematis provides a welcoming warm feeling for garden guests. The new Azak arbor and fence - NO maintenance!
- Trellis as ArtThis newly constructed outdoor room was hung with trellis frames displaying the climbing vines and accompanying plants as framed artwork.
- Using a Trellis to Conserve SpaceTo preserve the narrow area behind the play structure we used a common vertical trellis turned on it's side. We wanted to provide the nearby climbing vines an easy way to cover the massive fence that borders this yard. - Trellis to Liven Up a FenceApparently the neighbors don't want anything growing on their newly installed fence so we planted three trellises in the ground, away from the fence, and grew climbing vines, making sure they didn't touch the fence.
- Using Trellis to Conserve Space (Side View)Ok, so they touch fence a bit, but we tried.
- A Lattice WallIn an effort to screen the parked cars in the shared driveway, we installed a double lattice wall. Climbing vines will eventually screen out the view of the driveway.

- Arched Wall TrellisThe area between the two windows felt strangely bare so we installed a very large arched trellis. Almost immediately the clematis we planted took off up its ladder and within a season was lush and beautiful.

- Lattice Arbor as Romantic EntrywayThe open picket at the top of the fence and gate allow neighbors and homeowner a transparent view through the space.
- Lattice ScreenUtilities are easily concealed behind this no-maintenance vinyl lattice screen. Additional climbing vines are planted to add color and interest to the access side of the property. White was chosen to match the house trim color.
- Do It Yourself TrellisIf you don't have money or time to purchase a wooden or vinyl trellis you can make one yourself out of string or cable or rope. Help your climbers up and off they go.

- Honeycomb TrellisOne of the residents of this property is an MIT professor. Her teaching research is based in the honeycomb shapes found in nature. We just had to symbolize her work somewhere in the garden and we found these honeycomb trellises in NYC! They are also available online.

- Using Trellis to Conserve Space <br /> (View from picnic table)After the landscape was installed the vines began to climb!
- Double Trellis to Cover a Bare SpotThis path leading to the garden is lined with a hedge of sweetspire on the left side. To balance out the opposite side and add vertical interest we placed two trellises on the house. They are planted with burgundy and violet clematis.
- A Lattice Wall (Close-Up)When you have a really tight space which doesn't allow for a green screen or hedge, a lattice wall is a good alternative. Transparency of the material allows for light to dapple through and give the space a roomier feel.

- Lattice Arbor as Romantic Entryway (After)This previously fenced off area was an eyesore covered with overgrown rhododendrons.(next photo) The rhodies and fence were removed and an 18" stone wall was installed with a half picket fence atop. An arbor with lattice entryway was faced towards the street to invite passersby to a welcomed visit to the other side.Lattice Arbor as Romantic Entryway (After)This previously fenced off area was an eyesore covered with overgrown rhododendrons.(next photo) The rhodies and fence were removed and an 18" stone wall was installed with a half picket fence atop. - Lattice Arbor as Romantic Entryway (After)Climbing vines grow on lattice work. Four by four square latticework is used in this design.
- Garden GateAdd color to the garden by painting your garden gate a bold color such as this neutral gray that looks blue in the sunlight.
- Wooden GateAlthough we didn't design the gate, we did plant these two gorgeous Hawthorn trees to create a more inviting entryway.
