Vegetable Gardens
The definition of a traditional kitchen garden depicts a seasonally used space defined separately from the rest of the residential garden – the ornamental plants and lawn areas. And, in fact, most suburban vegetable gardens are still miniature versions of grandmother’s farm plot. Terrascapes prefers kitchen gardens that become landscape features; not to be hidden in the corner of the backyard, but a central feature of an ornamental, all-season landscape, sometimes even in the front yard. It should be a structured garden space and a design based on ease of use. Growing food is part of the ecological-friendly movement towards sustainable living, and our design intent is that the kitchen garden be seen, inspiring, and easy to use.

- Deck to Vegetable GardenThis site had been mostly lawn. We demolished the unused deck dominating the only sunny corner of the yard and transformed it into a vegetable garden. For more details on the whole project see the Portfolio Tab.
- Deck to Vegetable GardenThese inexpensive stacking boxes are laid on an 8 inch compacted gravel bed which is trimmed in cobble. The compaction stabilizes the surface for ease of walking.

- Front Yard Vegetable GardenFor our budget sensitive clients we laid a home-made gravel bed about 2" deep without a base (not recommended but sometimes that's all you can do) and set the tomato boxes on top. The owners have a wildlife problem so they edged the vegetable garden with a snow fence.

- Front Yard Vegetable GardenFront yards are sometimes the only sunny sites on the property and so that is where we decided to put the vegetable garden. We cleared a spot at the top of the hill and made a nice bed for this family's Earth Boxes.
- Side Yard Vegetable GardenRather than let this side yard go unused the young homeowners decided to make this their vegetable garden. Overhead mist irrigiation was installed on the fence, along with a turkey wired fence to keep wildlife out.
